CPD & Training

As part of its strategic objectives, IAQM aims to promote the education and training of its members. Relevant material is set out below.

Continuing professional development

Continuing professional development (CPD) aims to facilitate your career development through structuring your needs and requirements and by providing incentives to continue learning and improving your professional skills.

IAQM operates a CPD process to allow members to develop as air quality professionals. Please click here for a CPD self-evaluation form - IAQM members are required to keep this up to date.  The guidance document which accompanies the form (click here) explains the requirements and what counts as CPD.

Please contact the IAQM secretary with any queries.

In addition to IAQM requirements, the Institution of Environmental Sciences (IES) operates a mandatory CPD scheme for all members.

Criteria for Accreditation of short courses/ conferences

IAQM will be undertaking accreditation of short courses and conferences.  The long term aim is to accredit courses suitable for air quality professionals in a wide range of subjects under our strategic aim “Promoting the education and training of air quality professionals”.  Initially we are starting with short courses and conferences with a view to extending the scheme to longer courses in the future.  The criteria for IAQM accreditation are as follows:

The course should satisfy the following criteria.

  1. There is a clear syllabus for each unit of the course, a clear statement of learning outcomes and a clear route to testing knowledge. These should provide sufficient detail for the IAQM to be able to review the course content which should be relevant to IAQM members’ skills and practice.
  2. Information on the air quality experience and quality of the lecturers delivering the individual units should be provided, and information on reference materials supplied to the student made available.
  3. The organisers of the course to be accredited should seek feedback from the students attending the course. It is anticipated that this should demonstrate a minimum level of student satisfaction. If not accreditation may be with drawn. This feedback should be made available to the IAQM.
  4. If a course is approved then the course material can use the IAQM logo and state that it was IAQM accredited.
  5. Normally a course would be approved for a period of 3 years subject to a satisfactory review, including student feedback, after this time.
  6. Normally accreditation would be approved by two persons, usually Committee members, who have been appointed by the IAQM Committee to carry out the accreditation process. These individuals would write to the person with responsibility for running the course to inform he or she of the IAQM’s decision. Any disagreements would be referred to the full IAQM committee.
  7. Depending on the amount of administrative effort required to review a course’s provision, the IAQM may have to charge a fee. Normally the accreditation process should be completed in 3 months.

If you are interested in having any courses or conferences accredited, please contact Adam Donnan.  All accredited courses will be included on the ‘Events’ or ‘Training’ sections of our website.

Courses
MSc / Diploma in Air Pollution Management and Control

A part-time or full-time postgraduate course at Birmingham University, UK. It aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of air pollution, its management and control.  The course describes the underpinning basic science of the atmosphere, both its physics and its chemistry, needed to understand air pollution and its dispersal.  It explains the causes and the effects/impacts of air pollution, its management from local to international levels, and the engineering controls used to reduce emissions from industry and transport.  Research methods are also introduced and there is the opportunity to go into greater depth in a particular chosen area through a literature review and a research project.
